How to Negotiate Better Prices with Material Suppliers
Knowledge is Leverage
Before any negotiation, know the current market price for your materials. Use indices like the BCIS Material Cost Index or simply get 3-5 quotes for comparison.
Volume Commitments
Suppliers give better rates when they can plan their production. Committing to a full project volume upfront — even with staged deliveries — typically saves 8-15% versus spot buying.
Payment Terms
Offering faster payment (14 days instead of 60) can unlock 3-5% discounts. If your cash flow allows it, this is free money.
Build Relationships
The best prices come from long-term relationships, not one-off squeezes. A supplier who trusts you will hold stock, prioritise your deliveries, and warn you about price increases.
Alternative Materials
Always ask: is there an equivalent product that costs less? Engineered timber instead of solid, recycled aggregate instead of virgin — often the alternative performs identically at 20-30% less cost.
