Drone Surveys for Construction: Getting Started

Drone Surveys for Construction: Getting Started

Why Drones?

A drone survey that takes 30 minutes replaces a ground survey that takes 3 days. The accuracy is comparable (2-5cm with RTK GPS), the cost is 70% lower, and nobody needs to work at height.

What You Need

  • A commercial drone (DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise or Phantom 4 RTK for survey-grade)
  • A CAA flyer ID and operator ID (UK) or Part 107 certificate (US)
  • Flight planning software (DJI Pilot, Pix4Dcapture, or DroneDeploy)
  • Processing software (Pix4D, OpenDroneMap, or RealityCapture)

Use Cases

Progress Monitoring

Weekly orthomosaic maps compared against the programme. Visual proof of progress for client reporting.

Earthworks Volumes

Cut and fill calculations from point clouds. Accurate to within 2% of traditional survey methods.

Roof and Facade Inspections

Inspect areas that would otherwise need scaffolding or cherry pickers. Thermal cameras can also detect insulation defects.
